Traditions

I don't know how traditions begin. Is it an incident that gets repeated time and time again and then one day you realize you've been doing it and and therefore it has become a tradition? Or can you just announce "we have a new tradition"? I really hope the latter is true, because 2 years ago that is exactly what I did.

It was Finnegan and Patrick's 1st Birthday Party. Our home was filled with family and friends. After an hour of mingling and letting lots and lots of babies play, it was time for cake. We put the boys in their high chairs and placed the smash cakes, with the lit number 1 candles, in front of them. Patrick cried immediately and Finn looked quite curiously at the sweet treat.

It was as if it happened in slow motion - Finn reached for the flame and I just couldn't stop him. Before I knew it his little hand was in the flame and my sweet baby was in shock. For a second he was quiet, I thought "Nope, he didn't do it, he's not hurt" and then came a blood-curdling scream. I whisked him out of his seat and up the stairs to my room. Luckily, I was followed by our friend, and fellow parent of multiples, Michael Parker, who is a firefighter and former paramedic. He took a look at Finnegan's poor hand and advised me to get him to a doctor.

My mom and I took Finn to the urgent care down the street and I advised Gill to let the party continue. Finn was treated for his burns, and bandaged up. When we returned home, I brought him to his nursery to try to calm him down (he had been screaming the entire time we were gone). I stripped him down to his diaper, don't know why kids are alway happier naked, and read him his favorite book "I love you through and through". And, after a while, we returned to the party. I fed my injured, naked, one year old cake (icing) and announced at that very moment, "We have a new tradition - no lit birthday candles from now on!"

Last year the tradition began. All our guests had been to the party the previous year. We all laughed about our family tradition as we sang "Happy Birthday" to the boys with not a matchbook in sight.

Finnegan loved every minute of his birthday cupcake and obviously didn't miss the candle.

This year, Finn and Patrick having been talking about their party for weeks. They tell me how they can't wait to play with their friends, to get balloons, to eat cupcakes, and to blow out their candles. I have no idea where they got the notion that they are getting candles!! They have gone to several birthdays recently and seen other kids do it.

That's my dilemma. In 10 hours, the boys' birthday party will begin and a decision will have to be made. Do I stick with tradition and cut the wick off the #3 candles or do I break tradition and let my big boys blow out their candles while I wish for no visits to emergency rooms?

Stay tuned...

Rear View

I rely heavily on the rearview mirror in the car.
It allows me to keep an eye on my boys and to witness the best things:

A Proud Patrick, after he rolled down the window and shouted:
"Hello everyone, it's me, Patrick. I'm here!"

The ever-caring Finnegan taking care of baby Sully.
Finn always plays with Sullivan or gives him his paci, whatever it takes to keep his baby brother happy.

3 Sleeping Kids - A miracle

Eating lunch in the car - something I thought I'd never let them do!

No matter what I witness, I think it's wonderful that I have to look behind me to see my future - and it sure is bright!

Geeks!!

This weekend, I surprised Gill and had a "Daddy & Me" Portrait taken.

In October 2007, Gill had this picture taken with Patrick and Finnegan

and now Sully proudly wears the "My Dad's A Geek" shirt as well!

Happy Father's Day!

Today, we celebrated Gill and what a wonderful dad he is. If you haven't figured out by reading my blog, the boys ADORE their daddy.

It started off with a HUGE gift for daddy - all 3 slept until 8am!
(I hate to sound selfish, but man, I would love that gift someday.)

We had breakfast in bed for Gill,
including had painted coffee mugs made by Patrick and Finnegan.

Then, we hit the road for Dan Nicholas Park in Salisbury, NC. This park has all kinds of kid-friendly attractions and was a perfect spot to spend the morning.

The boys spotted the Carousel immediately and loved riding with Gill. Sully and I watched by the sidelines as they went round and round, waving to me every time they went by.

We visited the Nature Center and the boys explored all kinds of creepy crawlies.

We found a nice, shaded picnic table and we enjoyed a family lunch.

Happy Sullivan, after having is bottle.

Finnegan licking the chocolate off his fingers after he enjoyed one of Daddy's favorite cookies.

Dipping is too much fun...

After Lunch we went to the little railroad. The boys were so excited to Ride The Rails!

I told Patrick what this sign meant, he told me he as so sad for Maggie.

Patrick, Finn and Gill had a private train ride and had so much fun that they went again!

What a great day!

Happy Father's Day, Gill. We love you!

Fashion Friday

I can't even come up with a clever comment, I think the pictures speaks for themselves.

And people question why I don't let the boys dress themselves!!

Bonjour and Au Revoir

Today we had another very short visit with the Rodgers.
They were returning from their Paris trip and had a layover in Charlotte on their way to Arizona.
I made a little "American" themed picnic, complete with fried chicken and red/white/blue cupcakes!
Personally, I would have preferred Croque Monsieurs and Eclairs, but that's just me.

We all enjoyed the picnic, especially Finn and his cupcake!

Everyone loved on Baby Sully, especially Godfather Mike.

And, we got a great pic of all the kids!

We're so grateful to have seen the Rodgers 3 times in the past few months,
I think it's our turn to head to Arizona for a visit!!

Masterpiece Monday

This weekend, Gill travelled to New Jersey to visit with Grandpa Neil who is recovering from Surgery.

Before Gill left, the boys spent the morning creating artwork to send with him

Check out the amazing works of art!

We hope that these pictures help brighten his day - they sure made me smile!!

A Questionable Weekend

What do you do when Daddy is out of town, Sully is fussy from vaccinations and Patrick and Finn both have runny noses?? That was this weekend's main question.

How do you keep the boys happy and busy?
Combine some of their favorite activities - race cars and building blocks

What do you do when Finn, Patrick and Sully are tired and hungry at 11am?
Have lunch in Mommy's Bed!

What do you do when it's 95 degrees outside and the boys want to play?
Let them go for it and play pantless for 2 hours in the sand and water.

What happens when it's snack time and you realize you don't have any cookies to offer?
Let the boys help you bake peanut butter cookies after you hose them down
from their outdoor adventure.

Can you guess which cookies Finnegan and Patrick made?

How do you end a totally chaotic weekend on a good note?
Head over to Sara's for a cookout with my 3 "cool" guys!

Bribery

Yesterday, I took all my boys out for some VERY exciting outings.
Haircuts and Doctors appointments, need I say more?

We go to the best kids salon: Pigtails and Crewcuts. The place is filled with exciting things (aka Bribes) for the kids. From train tables to firetruck chairs to lollipops and flat screen TV's playing Toy Story Movies - they have it all.
And, it took every last one of those bribes to get the boys to get their haircuts.

When we got to Sullivan's Doctors appointment, the boys were strung out. So, the nurses convinced (aka Bribed) Patrick and Finnegan to sit still with ice pops!

Whatever it takes to get things done, right?
Oh, and don't you just love their "Daddy" haircuts?!?!
