A week ago Patrick and Finnegan signed up to compete in the school's Recycled Art Competition. The goal was to use only recycled materials to make a unique art project. They signed up in the group competition so they could work together. The group competition meant that they were competing with K-5s. They decided to make a Super Hero Race Track. Gill worked with them to build the track and then I helped them make it pretty! (They did all the work themselves, we just made sure they didn't use box cutters or paint the kitchen table purple)
Today, I helped them carry it into school and submit it. They were so proud of their work. Tonight, our family went back to the school for the Night of the Arts. It included musical performances, the school choir and the announcement for the winners of the art contest. We went back to see their art on display and ran into Mr. Moore, the principal. Patrick and Finnegan were so excited to show him their work. They asked him what his favorite part was, and he told them it was the Bat Man Tunnel!
We listened to the musicians in the auditorium and then it was time to announce the winners. First, they announced the winners for the individuals.
After the individuals were all done, Mr. Moore opened the envelope for the K-5 group project. He opened the envelope, looked inside and smiled. Then he said "The winners of the group competition are, our own DYNAMIC DUO with their Super Hero Race Track - Kindergarteners Finnegan and Patrick Kilcoyne!!!" The whole auditorium cheered! Big kids gave our boys hi-fives as they went up to the front to receive their prize from Mr. Moore. They stood proudly in the front as they received a $50 Target gift card. They were told that they will be on the school's morning news tomorrow and have their work displayed in the Media Center. They also received a first prize ribbon.
What a night! We are so proud of the boys. Patrick's idea was to make a race track and Finnegan wanted to make Super Heros, they worked together (and VERY hard) and came out with a winning project!
